epitome of incomprehensibility

"To celebrate H. P. Lovecraft Day, I read an essay about his critique of organized religion and his racism, and then look at my eyes magnified mysteriously in the bathroom mirror. They're bright blue-green, arrestingly beautiful, and as I look at them I discover that inside them is the landscape of an indoor swimming pool. This is very frightening. There are some things eyes were not meant to see - themselves." To celebrate International Women's Day, I sat on the kitchen stool eating an apple and some unsalted roasted pistachios, listening to CBC re-air an interview with Gloria Steinem while my father and brother washed dishes, and then I felt slightly bad because feminism isn't about making men wash dishes and that meant that next time I'd have to do them and why couldn't we just get a dishwasher... although the dishwasher-owning friend I'd been mentioning pointedly to my parents just had her dishwasher break down and people are more reliable in that way than machines, although they might get a cast on their hand or arthritis or other things that might prevent them from washing dishes... Nah, apart from the similar beginning, my dreams are (usually) much more interesting.

Row row row! I never understood the "but" in that song when I was a kid. Life is, but a dream? And when I learned it meant "only," I thought it was a much more profound sentiment than what was meant, related in some way to the mirroring eeriness of water.
