"how's the day treating you, finny?" "pretty fair, i guess." "that's what you say everyday." "i know, that's because it's true everyday." layna considered the response. it did seem to make sense. if anything could be fair, it would be the day. she was already seeing the genius in phineas. she left early this morning so she could have some time to talk to him, something she'd been meaning to do for a few days now. "phineas, will you climb down and walk me to class today?" phineas hesitated, there was nothing he desired more. he had wanted to talk with layna since the first time he saw her walking beneath his tree. there was something in the way she walked, the way she dressed, the way she talked, that made phineas feel comfortable, safe. but what if he said the wrong thing? he had so many things he wanted to say, so many things he needed to say, not just to anyone, but to layna. there were things she needed to know. we're all doomed anyway, he figured. "sure," he said. "hang on a sec" as he climbed down his tree phineas savored her rich tone as layna began telling him about the dragons that breathed flowers. the flowers flew through the sky like birds and whispered secrets to one another. they flew so far they flew to a different land where mountains grew upside down from the sky and fish made all the rules. one big fish pressed a button and everything became dark and cold and silent. the darkness was strong and smelled like ashes. it was closing in and squeezing out life in an instant a horrendous screeching beyond definition rang out and echoed and slowly died. the flowers had wilted and floated downward into oblivion. layna quietly breathed out soft whirls of air, hoping for everything and nothing, hoping for anything. "a dream about the end of the world," phineas whispered as they put one foot in front of the other, gliding toward layna's class.
