raze in the deep bed of reeds
we call breathing
i tunnel through
soil and strata
foraging
for slivers of a sonnet
abandoned on the outskirts
of sleep's broken spasms

comprised of concrete and muscle
sinew and stone
vasculature and asphalt

something to pound my fists against
or wrap my heart up in
or rest my head upon

are they barriers?
or are they pathways?
ones i have simply chosen to ignore

water and sand
fire and glass

Soma I built a wall so high I could not climb
To silence the voices all speaking true
My barricade would halt this chorus line
Lest I feel or hear a hopeful Love from you

The wall grew broader, crafted by my mind
An echo of the mountains' endless roar
The clamor left me lost, and so I designed
A barrier that life cannot transcend nor explore

Life’s trees and rivers beckoned sweetly, yet
My wall remained unbroken, and so alone
I spoke of them as if we had not yet met
Preserved in memory, forever unknown

But no matter how hard I tried to hide
I still see the vibrant blue of the riverside
