yappy
epitome of incomprehensibility Last evening, a poetry friend had just arrived home from a tiring work week when I called her. She's a teacher and she'd been having trouble convincing the school admin to update the file of a student who needed reading help. Finally, she's getting somewhere on the case...

...but she was explaining this in so much detail and I wanted to stop talking. I went to the kitchen, looked at the numbers on the stove, and said, "Oh, my supper is almost ready. I should go soon."

That was a lie. The timer wasn't even on yet. It just showed the temperature.

I felt bad for prevaricating, even though the line changing a lie into something not a lie can be a loopy one (n to change lie into line, for instance). I mean, a simple "I should go soon" would fit the exigencies of my conscience, even if "should" is really "want to."

But I'm glad I talked to her after all. We arranged how and when I'd get to her neighbourhood barbecue today. I went and I had fun. And I'm often the too-yappy one.

Oh yes. While we were at the grocery store getting a few sauces and such, Leena called me - again with legitimate worries, again talking more than I wanted to listen to at the moment. At that point, my annoyance was more that I was doing something else and I didn't want to be rude to the friend shopping with me. And also that she expects too much. I can't do everything. I can have ears sometimes.
