Oh, and raze, I always assumed the bucket one had to do with hanging. Wikipedia says maybe but maybe not.

Maybe I have a Morbid Sense of Expressions sometimes and an Overly Cheerful sense of them other times: I remember how I was a bit shocked when I discovered the origin of "drinking the Koolaid" (a cult leader having people poison themselves). I just thought it was because Koolaid was something stereotypically bad for you, like McDonald's.
