the bones in the big toe strain as though compacted. i place my thumb and forefinger around the nailed knob and yank like a champagne cork, hoping for pops. pang bubbles instead. steps ache in boots, in sneakers, in slippers. i was moving through the discomfort of a final lap this morning when my heel joined in pained harmony, and my knee took a higher octave. concrete gives the body shocks that reverberate through the whole system; i opt for the spongy grass and stumble weakly in retreat. now is the time for stillness, for strategy.

It charms me how buildings in French can be called "immeubles": immovables. In contrast with furniture, "meubles." I felt that way this morning, but reading helped adjust me to the world. tender_square, you write so beautifully about a sore/intractable foot that I'll be lulled into forgetting there's a problem afoot. But if this is about you, yes, I hope it feels better soon!

to clarify: I felt immovable earlier this morning. Not French or charming. Also, other people's strained feet would be worth sympathizing about too! Unless they kicked a violin or something. Then they'd deserve it. :)
