ovenbird Sometimes on my walks I encounter the Harmonica Man, and he never fails to fill me with delight. As the weather warms you might catch a glimpse of him nonchalantly paddling a canoe down the Fraser River, playing jaunty tunes on a harmonica with his dog keeping watch from the stern. I often wave because it seems right to greet a man who is so inextricable from the landscape and makes it his mission to remind us of an urgent need to rest and be steered by the current. He strikes me as quintessentially Canadian somehow, keeping company in my mind with that old animation of the Log Driver's Waltz put out by the Canadian Film Board in 1979. I suspect the log driver and Harmonica Man would be fast friends, bonding over their mutual love of free flowing rivers and shared disdain for blackflies. For my part, I just wave and listen to the cheery music fading away as the river sweeps man and dog and canoe and harmonica towards to Pacific. I always have a little extra spring in my step afterwards as my faith in humanity is slightly restored. 250329
