ovenbird I couldn’t fall asleep last night. It’s not something I’ve grappled with much since deciding I no longer have the strength to let world news steep in my anxious belly…but things have been sneaking through–scary, overwhelming, grievous things–and when those terrifying fragments mixed with the adrenaline high of the first week of school and the endlessly unfolding plot of my day to day life, it resulted in something like wet cement, turning over heavily, sloppily, inside my brain, and the grinding and grumbling made so much noise that I couldn’t settle, and rumination was the spinning drum keeping everything from becoming concrete cottage cheese in the crevices of my cracked, chaotic mind. In moments like those I tend to worry that I will never sleep again while simultaneously fearing the sleep that never ends. But at some point I slept and dreamed and woke and my initials hardened to permanence on the surface of an imaginal sidewalk. 260910
