there might be more extant versions of this film than any other finished thing ever made on celluloid. it has to be in the running, at least. the so-called "final cut" is what i ended up seeing after decades of indecision. i watched it with adam. i'm guessing alice was there too. my memory's a little murky. i don't think it was the night i killed their couch. i know it was after victoria disappeared but before we knew she was dead. though i suspected what no one else wanted to say. i'm not sure i'd change much about the assembly ridley scott settled on. when harrison ford recorded the studio-imposed voiceover track for the theatrical release, he went out of his way to do the shittiest job possible out of spite, or so the story goes. and yet, hidden in the mess of moments that work better without any exposition, there's a line that never should have been lost: "i didn't know how long we had together. who does?"

where BR1982 operates (beautifully) within relative darkness and relative silence, Blade_Runner_2049 operates (beautifully) within pronounced color templates and dynamic contrast, mirroring silence against bombast, very calm against very intense. It's a worthy counterpart. see it when you're ready (if you haven't)
