"i got this haircut and i got this line tattooed there because i wanted to get as close as i could again to know what it felt like to be an outsider. to feel the unearned animosity, and probably hatred is not too strong a word to use, from people who i do not know and haven't done nothing to. i have simply cut my hair in a certain way and had tattooed on my own skin a line that i wanted and paid for. i got the 'do and the 'too on the same day. the first reaction i had, i walked into a convenience store and a little old lady — she was about my mama's age, which is eighty-one — she was there at the counter. she had her little change purse out, doing her thing, and she looked up and she said, 'get back!' and she was coming at me. i said, 'no, ma'am.' and i'm trying to get out the door. and the question is, what do you do if a little old lady has got her teeth glued in really well and bites you?"
