purse
raze a woman ran to catch us on our way out of the park.

"someone just stole my purse," she said. "did you guys see anyone with a green bag?"

we didn't.

she ran through a gap in the side of the gate and asked two other people the same question. far away on the path i saw a group of four. someone was carrying a bag. it was green. but it wasn't a purse. it was more the sort of thing you'd shove a bunch of birthday presents into to keep them together.

when we got to our car, the woman was standing in the middle of the road. her purse was slung around her shoulder. she was smiling and talking to a married couple pushing a sleeping baby in a stroller.

the only thief was an innocent mistake of her own making. those two parked their stroller next to hers near the playground. she stashed her purse in it thinking the child's chair on wheels belonged to her. they took it with them without knowing it was there.

her son stood near the swings, guarded by a friend. she made her way back to him. this time she walked.
