st_johns
past it was my day off, i was walking around the neighbourhood in shorts and sandals enjoying the sun when the call came.

"something's wrong with mom!"

"what is it? wait where are they?" i had one hand to my ear against the noise of the street.

"far side of newfoundland. no idea what it is but dad's taken her to a hospital and they need to airlift her to st. john's. he'll be there in two days driving."

quickly, i ran home, booked the next flight and a cheap hotel near the hospital. the cab got me to the airport just in time, and i beat mom to st. john's by four hours. the miracle of flight.

sitting outside the hospital in the dark dressed for a kind of summer day that doesn't arrive on this rocky island, playing a bad video game on my phone, when the nurse popped out. "she's here."

i went in not knowing what to expect. information was slow and now i was about to be at the front of the line.

carefully i entered the room, "i hate flying" she muttered "but i'm happy i'm not alone anymore."
