tender_square turns out pretending to work is harder than doing actual work. i exist in this no-state where workflow isn’t occurring. my role is to bid on tenders, yet my employer is so tied up with current jobs we can’t apply to future ones. i update company resumes; i scrutinize the company profile; i research a list of pivotal builds to be used in our portfolio. none of them are necessary or time dependent. i don’t bill work orders like my colleagues, mostly because there’s no project for me to start fresh from, only a bunch of current clients with wildly specific invoicing needs too arcane to be taught. i’ve been tasked with a project to manage labour project rates—number crunching, data entry—yet i wait to be given the go-ahead and hands-on direction to bring those fraught figures to the present. so, i take too many trips to the bathroom, walking past the ceo’s office, the one with a huge, tinted window. i read too many fluff articles online and follow community reddits for where i live and where i used to live. i watch security camera footage of the tenant as it unfolds. i send personal emails and text with friends. i occasionally answer reception and monitor an inbox that receives no mail. eight hours of pretending to look busy is a slog. 230818
