raze he guessed he dug it himself. he didn't remember digging it, but he guessed he must have. it was deeper than he was tall, and wider all the way around, and he stood at the bottom of it knowing he could lose himself in it but climbing out would be easy. it stopped being easy when she dropped down there with him. he knew if he let her go she would die, because the hole was his. he knew how to live in it and how to get out of it. she was smaller than he was, and she didn't know about a thing like that. she didn't even know it was a thing she was supposed to know. with his left arm he held onto her as if she were his child. with his right arm and his feet he tried to climb up and out for both of them. he only made it halfway. he couldn't hold her and climb at the same time. he needed the other arm, and he wasn't prepared to let her go to get it back. so they stayed there, him with his shoes and five free fingers digging into the wet cement of new soil, her with oblivion in her eyes, and the day did its business without them. 140402
