we did a series of short scenes on all topics, from people being literally thrown across the stage, to snippets of conversations, dance pieces, etc. At the end, as a final piece, we asked the audience not to clap us.

they were confused, there was some clapping (to which we shouted "STOP!") then, as we walked off stage, some applause started again, but you could tell they didn't really know whether they were supposed to or not. it was quite amusing.

we once went to a play where the performers had decided that, for dramatic effect, they wouldn't take their bows. It was weird. The audience just clapped and clapped, they wouldn't leave. Eventually, reluctantly, the actors had to come on stage and bow, just to get rid of the audience. It was a ritual the audience would not allow to be broken.

another illustration that people will generally do whatever they think is expected of them, regardless of the sense it fails to make.
