triangles
tender_square she said she had been painting since she was twelve. she said she worked with wildlife. she told us to take a sheet of watercolour paper from our pads and to draw two triangles that touched in some way. she passed out watercolour pans with hardened hues. take the round brush, she said, dip it into the water and rub it for about six strokes onto whatever colour you choose, then paint one of your triangles. the intention was to study how the pigments mingled, how the water became a river that carried colour into the receiving shape. i took my sheet into my hands, angled planes that made lemonade disperse its dye into indigo. we repeated the steps again and again, watching our results dry. out in the open hallway, kids screeched like dying hyenas, while basketballs continually pummeled the wall our art room shared with their gymnasium. 230112
