the_bear_and_the_ant
tt the bear and the ant sat side by side at the rhino's party. there was a cake in front of them.

the bear pulled the cake toward him with a flourish and started eating.

after a while, the ant asked, "may i have a piece too?"

the bear took another bite of cake, looked at the ant and tried to say something, but his mouth was too full.

he took a piece of paper and wrote:

"my mouth is too full. what did you say?"

"may i have a piece too?" said the ant, a little louder this time.

the bear continued to chew and replied in writing:

"if you want to ask me anything, you'll have to write it down. my jaws are grinding deafeningly and i can't hear a word you are saying."

the ant picked up a piece of paper and wrote:

"may i have a piece too?"

the bear took a giant bite, reflected briefly, and then wrote:

"a piece of what?"

the ant started grinding his teeth and wrote:

"may i have a piece of cake before it is finished?"

the bear put the last piece in his mouth and said, "mmm delicious."

then he called out, "what kind of cake was that rhino?"

"sweet grass cake," called the rhino.

"oh," said the bear.

he turned to the ant in surprise.

"didn't you want to try a piece?" he asked.

but the ant had risen to his feet and was standing somberly behind a branch of the willow, gazing at the ground.

the bear sighed and his chair creaked, then snapped, and he slowly tumbled to the floor.
