patriotism
epitome of incomprehensibility I don't know how many people feel the same way, but I find it weird from a number of perspectives. Why be more emotionally attached to your country than, say, your neighbourhood? It's not like (most) people working in big companies like their company more than their friends and family.

And if you're trying to attach yourself to something greater, why not find something a little more permanent? Granted, maybe permanence isn't the point (people who know more about Buddhism can advise me here) but nations are quite short-lived compared to the land they're on, barring sudden catastrophes like volcanoes and earthquakes.

Let's say I suddenly discover I'm living in the nation of Quebec instead of Canada. Maybe I'm worried because my spoken French isn't that great and people will insist on me speaking it in public, but the sky's still blue, right? The air still contains a suitable percentage of oxygen, I hope, right? We're still mistreating aboriginals, right? ...ah, but now I'm back to people instead of places. People are terrible.
