raze i think i was seven or eight when we got a nintendo system. i loved it, but my stepfather loved it even more than i did. "super mario bros." gave him insomnia. he would get up in the middle of the night, go downstairs, and spend hours trying to beat the game. it got to the point where my mother would hear the music in her head even when he was in the bed next to her.

the game i was obsessed with wasn't even one of the good ones. it was "urban champion". one of the shittiest, least creative side-scrolling beat 'em ups ever made.

i don't know why it sucked me in the way it did. "ninja gaiden" had those great cinematic cut scenes and music that was so good i would play the game just to hear the songs. "the legend of zelda" was so deep it broke my brain. "mega man 2" was a brilliant platform game with another great soundtrack. but "urban champion" made me crazy. i played that game so much one night, by the time i was done i couldn't feel my thumbs anymore. i thought, "this is what plastic feels like. my thumbs are plastic."

i never made it to the end. some joker was always dropping a potted plant on my head.
