raze rain wrested it from the roost and glued it to the passenger side window, lime green and ragged around the edges. the meal it offered my eyes was too rich to be real. i saw a spider fight to stay on that same pane of glass once. we went the speed limit down some county road i never learned the name of, away from a yard_sale that didn't have anything we wanted, away from four horses i admired from a distance, and that blind black beauty did its level best to stay with us. it called on all the strength it carried in the juice that drove its legs. locomotion's ephemeral cyclone dislodged it before we were halfway home. i watched its spinnerets sail away from me, knowing it would be dead by the time it touched the ground. the seed this muddy morning blew my way had no limbs to lean on, but the wind couldn't evict that bit of life waiting for what sat between its wings to take root in fertile soil. it's still right there. and we're still right here. holding on. 220521
