lesbian_necklace
epitome of incomprehensibility In a dream, my mother objected to my gift to her this way. It was a choker with a large metal piece in front, textured like whale baleen, with small glass beads dangling from the bottom. "A woman can't give another woman a necklace," she said. "That makes it a lesbian necklace." She was sitting in her usual spot on the living room couch. Faced with the necklace, she turned away, waving her hand in seeming agitation.

In the dream, I didn't question the phrase, only why it was "lesbian" for women who were closely related to give each other jewelry when there was obviously no romantic intent.

But rules are rules: in my dream-mom's mind, I realize, it's only acceptable for men give jewelry to women...or women to men...but no same-sex necklace-giving. That's scandalous.

And then I woke up and felt bad about the background realities to this, even while rejoicing at the silliness of the phrase. "I'm too busy to be emotional," I told myself, being emotional.
