lammergeier
ovenbird (In response to field_guide_for_becoming_a_person)

And when you've died a thousand deaths, be brave enough to dig up the bones of everything you were. We've all been flayed. We've all watched our blood dry to ochre on the wall. Have you caged the tawny lammergeier in your breast? It wouldn't take much to free it. One broken rib, one gap in your defences. Feed it the bones you've buried. Watch it fly them eighty meters into the vaulted firmament and drop them to the rocks below. Watch it eat the marrow, warm from the channel of your tibia. Watch it swallow each pearl-like ossicle down, dissolving them in acid. Watch it swim in sulphur, until its neck is the bronze of a dying sun. Watch it make a nest of shriveled skin and brambles and feed its young everything that was dead in you. Then watch yourself come into being all over again. Crack your shell and grind calcium down to dust. We're all afraid. We're so afraid to die that we spend years dying to live. We nearly drove the lammergeier to extinction with our fear. What if you let yours fly? What if you let it clean the corpses from the hillside of your waning days? What if you made room for the impossible to rise?
