tender_square i keep the plastic and grass cloth block letters, m & c, décor from our wedding, on top of one our bookshelves in the living room.

in the mornings, when it’s too dark for daybreak, my neighbor’s garage fixture shines a 100-watt bulb through the exposed window above the shutters, casting light against that shelf.

the window has plastic grids between the panes, which gives the illusion of three separated squares. the grids create shadows on the wall not unlike the white boxes on “wheel of fortune.”

when my neighbor’s light shines through the window, the only letter it ever captures from the shelf is “c,” releasing my shadow across the first box. the last two remain empty.

i know which characters solve the puzzle; i’m just waiting until it’s my turn to meet fortuna.
