dutch
epitome of incomprehensibility Follow the lines on the language family tree; see it's related to both German and English. That doesn't translate into understanding Dutch if you speak English and/or German...but a few words fit neatly between the two:

Straße - straat - street

Others are only cognate with German:

Schlüssel - sleutel - key

On my own family tree are some Van Horn ancestors: Nanny, my father's mother, had this maiden name - her father was Dutch-American, mother Irish-American. I used to remember the name as Van Horne before I came across Aunt Sarah's binder; it seemed more elegant with an E, as the fictional Anne Shirley might attest.
