raze a wild animal i've named for calcium carbonate in crystalline form walks across my chest to wake me. i'm not sleeping. two more just like her creep across a telephone line, struggling not to be seen. the truck that's meant to take me away from here has two stopgap sofas to choose from. i take the bench seat in the back and prop my head up with a pillow. the driver says i'm going to have a hell of a time nodding off tomorrow when the cold front comes in. i can't imagine anything but the warmth i feel flowing through me now. i think of people who have died. i see their faded faces and wonder what their last words were. i know what mine are bound to be. 250603
