what_language_are_you_speaking
epitome of incomprehensibility A few minutes ago, I was standing inside the Vendome train station entrance, wondering something about two people near me who were deep in conversation. Both women, it looked like; both white; one with red hair, the other brown. When I glanced at them again, I saw that the red-haired one was older, making me think they might be mother and daughter...that the older one looked like my mom in her early 50s and the younger like my cousin Lia in her early 20s.

But what they looked like wasn't the main thing. I was wondering the question in the title. The vowels sounded Spanish to me, the consonants Slavic. Then I caught a word like "dann" at the beginning of a statement, then-like. If it does mean "then," I thought, I've been barking up the wrong language tree. Germanic, not Slavic or Latin. My guesses are Swedish, then Dutch, but I was too shy to ask.
