i've only been to the new fair grounds maybe once or twice before this weekend. they moved out of their old location a few years after i left town. the old space, split between the hospital and a developer, only holds fragments of its previous use, and the many memories of those fields, halls, barns, and grandstands. growing up the fair marked my birthday: the town throwing me a party. my dad would take me to the demolition_derby to watch guys smash up their old cars in a violent, but strangely friendly and goreless, celebration. the new grounds, out at the edge of town (and of course the old ones were at the edge of town when they were established over 150 years ago), kept many of the elements of the old. strange pulls on the memory as the display cases that once held my sorry attempts at art do the same for a new generation. even the awning over the grand stands moved. in so many ways, this is the same place, just a few kilometres south. but it is so different.
