octopus
epitome of incomprehensibility A little paper for Language and Mind: watch a video about octopuses and write a response paper on how they relate to one of Jackendoff's three fundamental arguments about language. I picked "innate knowledge," talked about how octopus behaviour demonstrates it and how it is and isn't similar to language.

The documentary was called Aliens of the Deep. Discovery, BBC. Dramatic music, a narrator with a soothing Scottish accent, and the assertion that octopuses have three hearts and nine brains - for the brains bit, it's more that their neural system is spread out so their central brain connects to mini-brains in their legs.

Octopuses are so dang cute. The way they move! All those little suction cups and the way the ends of their tentacles curl! Which made it sad - yet intriguing - to see that octopuses die shortly after reproducing, their lifespan only around three to five years (and that's for the larger ones).

The mother hatches a mass of tiny eggs, sitting there and not eating - in one species for six months. Shortly after they hatch, she leaves and dies. The male dies too - not sure why.
