past the concessions run straight from the water, often the nearest great lake, but once you're a county or two inland the reference points shift. here it's from the big river. the problem is the river's not straight, by the compass, and curls around asserting its own authority to dictate local "north" in reference only to itself.

here and there the strict upper canadian logic, tracing smooth likes across broken terrain, has clashed with more modern urban geographic sensibilities, just as peninsulas, islands, and bending streams left "unusable" (according to our strict utilitarian political rationalities) pockets. these little places of irrationality blossom as unofficial parks, random medians on quiet residential streets.
