raze a woman slows her car to a crawl in the middle of a street i once made mine. she says something in spanish to her long-haired cats before setting them free. they exchange baffled looks and slink into the nearest public park, a retinue of black and brown riddles. a black pig with the face of a benevolent bear grins and grunts and makes a meal of the walnut slivers i offer while we stand on the same strip of sidewalk. three young rats with outmoded coats move in concert, fearful of the false gods that surround them. bronze birds take turns diving for refuse left at the feet of a stone statue. and then there's me. trimming my terminal teeth to keep them keen. dancing downhill with all the grace of an unpinned grenade. i ask a carnivore who's wise about these things how to make love last without losing my mind. "find someone willing to share your madness," he says. "boggle your words, and clear your calendar for a thousand funerals." and so i will. 250704
