everything_under_the_sun
raze yesterday he was raking leaves in our front yard. like always, he came over unannounced. and like always, he left the mess he made for someone else to clean up. i saw his disembodied liver-spotted face floating past my field of vision when i looked out the back door to see if the nuts i laid down for my friends were still there. all he did out back was move a plywood plank. he sets it on top of the central air unit in the winter and weighs it down with a brick. i guess to keep the snow from getting in. in warmer weather, he leans the ragged square against the fence. i carried it to the side of the house a few weeks ago so it wouldn't block my occasional rabbit visitor's favourite hiding spot. jerry put it back where it came from. then he left. sammy stopped in to see me not long after that. he wasn't his usual self. he seemed edgy. i did the math and figured he must have caught jerry making his rounds before i got outside. "i know, sammy," i said, holding out a treat for him to take from my hand. "i don't like him either." the house we live in might be his, but the man doesn't own everything under the sun. even if he likes to think he does. 230411
