a twisted pair of insulated copper wires carried your voice to my ear and my voice to yours. we were thinned-out, narrowband versions of ourselves, and what emphasized the distance between us made us more real to each other.

we could talk for hours, until our words were analog whispers. until i could feel your breath on my neck and you could feel my hands in your hair. we could hold each other without touching.

but we don't do that anymore.
