johnny_appleseed
raze we played this game when i was too young to tap out but old enough to understand. the kids would yell out johnny appleseed and scatter. cousins and sisters and strangers and friends. all of them running as fast as their legs would let them move. it wasn't like tag. no one was ever "it" but me. and if i managed to touch someone, they would only scream my name before abandoning me again. i stood outside my grandmother's house, her grass ground down to the crown, and watched everything i thought i loved fade out in the slow-growing dark. truth is i was never the seed. i was the tree all the other apples fell from. my bark is gnarled and knotted now. the soil has changed. these roots refuse to run. 260717
