~ In response to a question in the redtree_cultural_literacy_game. Warning, horrible generalities follow ~
If a New Zealander is doing well, not embarrassing themselves, and generally a pretty cool person, then we are happy to claim them as Australian.
For example, these may be classified as Australian:
- Sam Neill
- Emily Barclay
- Evermore
- The Finn Brothers
- Pavlova (it's a great dessert - this principle doesn't just apply to people)
But these are definitely New Zealanders:
- Russell Crow
- Holly Valance
- Keith Urban
- Mel Gibson (I know he actually has nothing to do with New Zealand, but we don't want him any more)
I think New Zealanders are much more offended at being mistaken for Australians than vice versa. Maybe because the latter doesn't happen very often.
Aussies like to make fun of kiwis (the standard fall back joke being about kiwis being overly fond of their sheep). This is probably because we are secretly afraid they are cooler than us. (Evidence tabled - Female Prime Minister, Peter Jackson, first country in the world to grant women the vote, less genocide of native peoples haunting their history etc)
Any kiwi skites around?
