mine isn't an animal at all, but a gathering of textile fibers cut free from one pilling sock, now frozen in the form of a person falling forward with one arm outstretched to guard against worse hurt than whatever the nearest future holds.

Here's the theory I've heard secondhand from celebrities that do really really good drugs: You ask a question: what's your favorite animal? Press them for an immediate answer, first thing that comes to mind. When they answer, you nod and say ok. Maybe ask them to elaborate or listen while they choose to elaborate. Then, more calmly and patiently ask them what's their second favorite animal. Give them as much time as they need, but still demand an answer. The theory is that the first animal is how they think of themselves, the second animal is closer to what they really are. This doesn't exactly work if they can see it coming, if they're given time to think about their first answer. Like if you were to go down the line asking the questions to a group of people all at once. Wouldn't work the same way. It needs to be an impulse answer, from the subconsciousness. My first answer was a bird of prey, like an eagle or a falcon. My second answer was a fox.
