epitome of incomprehensibility

I was swimming in the middle of an ocean, as one does, when a realistically rendered but recognizable version of the anguished horse from Picasso's "Guernica" reared up beside me. Its fur was brown, lighter around its neck and the mane tinged darker. The animal stretched out its head diagonally; its eyes rolled, showing the wild whites; and its mouth opened, showing a yellow-white rows of teeth. I knew it would eat me if I didn't move. Fast. So I closed my eyes and tried to will myself somewhere else, but that ended up with me opening my eyes into the real world and being a) irritated at waking earlier than I needed to and b) impressed with my dream's highbrow reference. Although that reference came from a waking moment, when Shiloh was rolling on the grass yesterday and I caught sight of his wild-looking eyes. I asked myself why they looked wild and concluded it was because I could see more of the white part than usual. That made me think of the painting, but I remembered it wrong - the horse's pupil's are small points, which doesn't have the same effect. The rest of the expression conveys the pain and fear. (And Shiloh wasn't anguished or angry. Possibly itchy after being splashed with muddy water, possibly just excited about whatever smell lingered on the grass.)
