I design the built environment that contains medical practice. The medicine - its practice, its profession, its reason for being - is what is important to the users of the buildings I design. And I love this - there is no room for showing off. My work facilitates, optimises and enhances. It gives dignity and compassion - I hope. I became and architect to show off, to feel like I was the controller, the deteminer, the big dick. My working career has humbled me. Beauty and pragmatics - when realised well - allow the inhabitants, the occupants, the users, the humans - to do, with pride, to be how they need to be - to live - sheltered from the disturbances from which they hide. I am an architect - but I must understand, must know, must feel - the human. Otherwise Im just being - I dont know the word - perhaps it is - cheap. Architecture - its practice - some, even of distiguished pedegree - say is prostitution. They say - as a practicioner - if your client was hitler - you must design his chambers of death. I dont think so - I have a duty - my clients pay my price - the world pays my care. Its important architecture - its our clothes and - our soul - whatever that may be.
