raze they used to fly away as soon as they caught sight of me. now and then i'd hear one of them singing from a branch above my head. such a sweet, soft thing. i spent most of my time watching them from the other side of a glass crescent. it gave me comfort to hear them calling to each other even when my eyes couldn't tell me where they were. yesterday they took turns standing on sod that hasn't been cut since winter buried it beneath a blanket of shaved ice. they met my gaze and waited to be fed. then they ran toward what was theirs and left, weaving their way through a morning that wouldn't have burned half as bright without them. 230329
