Sonya A soothing flame shined brightly from his kitchen. He smelled the air and suddenly had a craving for apple pie. Slowly his eyes zoomed in on the little red candle in the frosted glass jar. It was a token of sorts. It reminded him of her presence in his life, however dull it seemed to him.

She had never baked a pie before. In her daydreams she saw herself in their cozy kitchen with a toddler tugging impatiently on her pants. Some specks of flour would be on her cheeks as she rolled the dough for the crust. The apples would be sweet and doused heavily with cinnamon because he loved it so much. She'd finally look down at the child and see his face in a young soul. "It'll be ready soon," she'd say softly.

The candle's life finally faded away. He cleaned the jar and kept it safely with his other mementos of years long gone. Somehow ever since he lit that little candle his kitchen has maintained the scent of a dream yet to come true. The apple pie would be ready soon. "Somehow I'd much rather see her face speckled with flour," he thought, smirking.
