seagull
raze the legend goes something like this: seagull kept all the world's light in a box beneath his wing. the other animals were forced to feel their way through darkness until raven found seagull's hut. she cut branches from a thorn bush and built a trail that led to the sea. in the morning, seagull stepped on the thorns. pain and surprise loosened his grip on the box. it broke open when it hit the ground. he watched as all he'd hoarded for himself seeped into every dark corner. it belonged to everyone now. raven said a storm must have blown the branches down, but seagull knew better. every bird that bears his name makes the same sound, but it isn't a warning or a cry for help. it's a song they sing to tell us where the light came from, and to remind us we all carry our portion of it. 220414
