neoncrackle my dad used to think it was funny to tell me lies & see how long i'd gullibly go along with them as a kid

to be fair, this behavior would be funny in a vacuum. i would laugh at it, on a sitcom maybe

but it's hard now, as a deep skeptic who finds it so hard to trust what people tell me in adulthood to not see that as part of the root cause for my mistrust.

the phrase "set up to fail" comes to mind
