howling
raze i heard you calling out
in pain or fear, rending
the night's pith with
something worse than words.

only it wasn't you.
it was a dog howling
in the unforgiving dark.

two lonesome moans,
clear as anything.

then silence so severe
it could swallow us whole.

i kept my answer clenched
in the thicket of my throat,
a mute mongrel buried
under blankets.
