aufmerksam
epitome of incomprehensibility Tyler, one of the students student, made sure to offer his host "mother" the food platter. She called that "aufmerksam."

I asked what that meant.

"Oh...like a gentleman."

"Like, like, polite?" I asked.

TK looked it up on her phone. "Observant? Noticing things?"

Not quite, the native speakers indicated.

"Conscientious?" I went. I meant to say "considerate," but I couldn't think of that, so I went the fancy route.

Friedrich beside me: "Attentive."

That seemed to be right, and I said, "Oh, yes, attentive, yes," even though I couldn't really know, just guess.

But later I couldn't remember the German word, so I looked up "attentive" and sure enough, there was "aufmerksam."
