tender_square ruby runs to a red bucket filled with dormant water, the drowned bodies of bugs filming the top. she sticks her snout inside and loudly laps, sloshing more water on the pavement than into her mouth. she barks in the bucket, a gurgled protest that makes dad and i nearly spit our coffee. suddenly, she zooms across the patio, to white pail of yellowing rainwater and drinks that too. back and forth she runs, sprinting between these two containers, a relay race of water decorates the concrete until she is breathless and panting, soaked and joyful. 230617
