crOwl our much anticipated baby chicks arrived three days ago at the one room acme post office. 25 of mixed variety (polish, araucana, rhode island red, barred rock, cuckoo maran, and bantam) packed in a small, breathable box. the bantams are so tiny and must have got squished. three died by the second day, but one remains strong and is holding her ground amongst the bullies.

we have them set up in the basement under a heat lamp until they're old enough to go out in the new coop we're building.

kathy and i watched the tough little girl scratching at the grit and sipping water as the other chicks tower above her. we looked at each other, beaming, and at the same exact time said, "just like joan of arc."
