My grandmother always gave handmade cards. She gave them to everyone (grandchildren, cousins, the mailman, even the waitresses at her favorite diner) for just about every reason (holidays, anniversaries, to say thank you) and sometimes for no reason at all. It was a simple gesture, but I think about it a lot. To distill her actions into a few words of advice, I’d say this: Be kind to people, not just the ones close to you, but the ones that help you in small ways throughout your day. Not just the people who you love, but the people you work with, work for, and who work for you. Remember them when they least expect it, acknowledge them when they deserve credit, and always always send a thank you note — it’s just good manners.
