epitome of incomprehensibility

I sat on my parents' living room floor, shining a flashlight on the sound system to find how to get the right radio station. The machine whose buttons I was pushing was newfangled once and still sophisticated. The two buttons I'd been pressing were only getting main "channels"; with the flashlight I could see more, specify which signals the oldfangled rectangle could pick up. Every possible, please! When I got it back to the main CBC, the guest talking said "chairlessness." It was about homelessness; he was asking if housing was too much like musical chairs. If someone ends up without a chair, is it because there's something wrong with them? Or is it because the system's set up so that only some people can get chairs? (I was sitting on the floor - but temporarily, and on purpose.)
