no shades to shield them
from the burning ball
above their heads.

those who had forgotten
what was promised wondered
if rain was on the way.

the veil was lowered
and lifted in the time
it takes to fall in
and out of love.

when it was over,
everyone returned to the cold
confines of their homes,
deaf and blind to
the remains of the day.
