hittite_twerking
epitome of incomprehensibility From Benjamin W. Fortson the Fourth's textbook, about "e" in Common Anatonlian changing to "a" in Hittite:

"Examples include....tarku- ‘to dance’ [from] *terkw (‘twistin PIE; cp. the name of the English dance!)"

I was looking at that and I thought, "What? 'Twerk'? The word 'twerking' was around when this book was written??" and then I realized he meant the twist - the idea being that a twisting-to-dancing semantic leap was made at least twice in human history.

(But the twist DOES involve twisting. That thing with the knees. Fun, but tiring.)

Glossary of Non-Twerking Terms:

PIE: short for Proto-Indo-European, a reconstructed ancestor language to Persian, many Indian languages, and most European languages

cp.: short for "compare"; you'd think a Fortson the Fourth would get all Latinate and use "cf." instead
