raze maybe this is apocryphal. maybe it isn't.

the story goes that french nobleman and military officer jacques de la palice asked to have the inscription, "if he were not dead, he would still be envied," carved into his headstone.

the french word for "envied" is "envie". the engraver left too much space in the middle of the word by mistake, chiseling "en vie" (french for "alive") instead.

and so, jacques' headstone is said to bear these immortal words:

"if he were not dead, he would still be alive."
